Dr. Martens

With an injured ankle after a ski trip in the Bavarian Alps, military doctor Klaus Märtens decided to improve the design of his army boots, as he thought they prevented healing his ankle. Along with classmate Herbert Funck they started a factory where they took advantage of stretched rubber and made them into shoe soles. In conjunction with the launch of the shoes in 1960 they changed its spelling from the Dr. Maertens to Dr. Martens. In the beginning, the shoes were a symbol of the working class, and were used within subcultures such as punk. Dr. Martens is a brand that carries a story, they have taken a big leap from being a working class shoe to the big fashion icon it is today.
